Using 3D References

You can use Poser or Daz Studio 3d as a Reference Tool to create under-paintings that you trace over in Illustrator or Flash
or
Create an image directly in poser or Daz 3d which then gets brought into Photoshop to adjust colors.
You can also use the silhouette as in the Visualpump virtual gallery image.
You can adjust the figure's pose or use an existing pose and alter it for your needs.
You can move the camera angle to find the ideal composition.
You can adjust the lighting to gain the desired lighting effect.
In Poser the Background does not come into photoshop, in Daz3d it can.

Poser is available at Kendall in the open lab as well as the full workstations in 707-708
Daz Studio 3d is a free software- there are models that you can buy for as low as $3
